When it comes to having your external door locks changed or upgraded, it can be quite a daunting task choosing the right lock for your property and needs as there is such a huge variety available. This is why our team at Apex Mobile Locksmiths have decided to put together a list of the 5 best external door locks that are commonly used around the UK.

Deadbolts: A deadbolt lock is a heavy-duty lock that is completely separate from the door handle. A deadbolt is normally placed so that the bolt will come out of the door and into the wall once it is locked. Once the deadbolt is locked the door will not be able to be opened. If fitted correctly a deadbolt is an extremely tough and effective security measure, it is also important that the strike plate for the deadlock is installed properly to ensure that the bolt goes all the way into the wall.

Keyed Locks: If your door is not suitable for the use of a dead lock then a keyed lock is probably the best option. Keyed locks are most commonly found on patio doors. Locks that come fitted to patio doors and sliding doors are prone to wear and tear and they do not offer the level of protection you need for your home. This type of lock will offer a significant level of protection, particularly if they are installed both at the top and bottom of the door.

Electronic Locks: Electronic locks are fairly new to the market and it doesn’t require the use of a traditional type key. Most electronic locks require the use of a pass code entered into a keypad or even the use of a smart phone or key fob. This is a fairly high-tech option of enhancing the security of your home. This type of lock is becoming increasingly more common, particularly on new homes.

Door Handle Locks: This is probably the most common type of lock used around the UK, when used alongside locks such as the deadbolt they become incredibly effective.

Combination Locks: This type of lock can either be mechanical or electronic. The mechanical locks work via a twist dial or a push in button, and the digital locks usually require a pin or password much like a smart phone.
